welded cage under construction

A welder-fabricator works to construct a drilled shaft-reinforcing cage for a bridge project in New Jersey. This computer-controlled process can accommodate cages with vertical bars as large a #11 and spiral bars as large as #6 with a pitch as small as 2", as large as 24", or anywhere in between. This welded assembly results in a cage that readily withstands the rigors of jobsite handling. The bar spacing, spiral pitch and cage diameter are all computer controlled which yields a precise product. With capacity for cages up to 4' – 10" diameter, automated cage construction can save time, money and headaches on your next project.

This cage has been picked off a Dimension tractor trailer, and is ready for placement into the excavation minutes later. This 7' – 04" diameter cage will reinforce a bridge pier in Connecticut. It consists of forty eight #14 vertical bars with standard 90° hooks and #6 spirals at a pitch as small as 21/4". The cage will sit upon a reinforcing mat inside a concrete footing. Despite the weight and unwieldy nature of the pier cage, it retains it straight shape. Dimension engineers and builds structures that retain their integrity through transit, jobsite handling and placement into the excavation.

This cage, preassembled by Dimension, was delivered to the jobsite and placed inside the footing framework. Notice that Dimension personnel have placed a space in the spiral reinforcing through which the top layer of footing steel can be passed. The spiral has been terminated with sleeve and pin couplers above and below the space. The arrangement of this space allows for minimal fabrication work on the jobsite. A similar space was left at the proper elevation near the top of the cage for installation of the pier cap reinforcing. Attention to details like this can add up to big savings in jobsite labor.

one complex cage

This 7' – 06" diameter cage consists of seventy eight #14 vertical bars, equally spaced in pairs; #9 circular ties with seismic hooks, each hook enclosing one pair of vertical bars spaced every 44" down the length of the drilled shaft cage – over 70 feet! It was all shipped in one piece on our truck from the Dimension manufacturing facility. When your rebar cage details are exceedingly complex, think of Dimension Fabricators. We have the experience, the technologies and skilled personnel to construct the most difficult rebar arrangements.

Eight assemblies like this one were constructed by Dimension for a utilities project in New Jersey. These paired cages are up to 85 feet long with mechanically coupled #14 vertical bars, spiral reinforcing and individual square ties along the full length. A seven-foot space was left in the tie reinforcing to facilitate the jobsite installation of a large grade beam tying these drilled shaft cages together in pairs. The fabrication of two concentric cages poses special challenges that Dimension people take in stride.
